The nationally ranked University of Akron men's soccer team opened the 2026 season with a 3-0 win at home over the University of Dayton on Thursday, Aug. 20.

Freshman midfielder Londen Sears, junior forward Remi Agunbiade and senior midfielder Jack Sullivan scored goals for Akron, which is ranked No. 8 by Top Drawer Soccer preseason and No. 12 by the United Soccer Coaches Association.

Zips junior goalkeeper Brett Kaminski made two saves to record a shutout as 14th-year coach Jared Embick earned his 159th career win.

Agunbiade assisted on Sears' goal in the 11th minute and then scored an unassisted goal in the 17th minute. Sears assisted on Sullivan's goal in the 52nd minute.

Akron finished with an edge in shots (15-10), shots on goal (6-2) and corner kicks (8-2).

Kaminski and Zips defenders Nolan McGuire and Freddy Kossehasse played the full 90 minutes. Defender Matthew Paiva and midfielder Tyler Morck each started and played 81 minutes. Sam Bunch started defensively with McGuire, Kossehasse and Paiva.

The Zips will be back at FirstEnergy Stadium for their next two matches, hosting Army at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 24, and Wake Forest at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28.

DALLAS — The Indiana Fever's five-game winning streak came to an end Thursday night, as they fell to the Wings 91-85 at American Airlines Center.

Kelsey Mitchell finished with 37 points and five assists for her WNBA record 21st straight game scoring 20 or more points. Aliyah Boston had 14 points with nine rebounds, Makayla Timpson had 11 points and 12 rebounds, and Caitlin Clark had 10 points and eight assists.

The Fever (24-13) are now tied with Las Vegas in the standings, but retain third place via tiebreaker rules.

Dallas (21-16) was led by Notre Dame product Arike Ogunbowale, who had 32 points. Jessica Shepard added 26 with eight rebounds and Awak Kuier had 11 points, eight rebounds and seven blocked shots. Paige Bueckers added 13 points, eight assists and six rebounds.

Here's what I liked and disliked, and what the loss means.

What I liked in the Indiana Fever's loss vs Dallas Wings
  • Kelsey Mitchell breaking records: Mitchell didn't need the second half to break the record she's been working toward for 21 games. She scored her 21st point, cementing her recording-breaking 21st straight game with 20 or more points, on a cutting layup off a pass from Clark. She is the Fever's most consistent scorer this season by far, using her speed to slice through defenses and find ways to score on players six inches taller than her.
  • Caitlin Clark's block: Defense has been Clark's Achilles Heel through most of her collegiate and professional career, but she has taken a noticeable jump this season on the defensive end. She changed her mentality on defense coming into the 2026 season, putting more emphasis on trapping, trying to poke out the ball, and disrupting the paint. She showcased that improved defense with an emphatic block on 6-foot-2 Maddy Siegrist in the third quarter, forcing Dallas to get uncomfortable.
What I disliked in the Indiana Fever's loss vs Dallas Wings
  • Using challenge early: Fever coach Stephanie White opted to use her challenge on an out-of-bounds possession call with about three minutes remaining in the second quarter while the Fever were down by one. The challenge was inconclusive, technically, which means the call stands, and the Fever lost both a timeout and their challenge for the rest of the game. Burning the challenge early in the game meant that, in what had been an extremely close game, the Fever did not have a challenge for the entire second half.
  • Letting Jessica Shepard do her thing: Ironically enough, the only thing that stopped Jessica Shepard in the first half was a pair of free throws. She didn't play in the Wings-Fever game last week because of injury, but quickly made her presence known in the rematch with 22 points in the first half on 10-of-11 shooting — including a 3-pointer that had a favorable bounce around the rim before dropping. Indiana did a much better job of limiting Shepard in the second half, but those early points gave Dallas the fighting chance it needed. And the second half is when Ogunbowale heated up, too.
What the Indiana Fever's loss vs Dallas Wings means

Indiana could have clinched a playoff spot with a win, but that will need to wait another day. It was unlikely the Fever would have come out of this brutal road trip undefeated, and both Shepard and Ogunbowale found ways to easily exploit the Fever's defense.

Khaman Maluach already has one of those uncomfortable rookie moments every young player eventually experiences, and his came courtesy of Peyton Watson.

During a sit-down conversation with his Phoenix Suns teammate Dillon Brooks, Maluach said that Watson gave him his first official “welcome to the NBA” moment in a game against the Denver Nuggets.

“My welcome-to-the-league moment was when we played in Denver, and I got subbed in. And I remember Peyton Watson coming off the pick-and-roll, and I’m thinking like, ‘Oh, I’m just gonna body up.'”

“And he goes up, and he dunks the ball, and like, boom, boom. I see the whole base up, and I was like, ‘Yep, welcome to the league, man.'”

It was the perfect introduction to how quickly things happen in the NBA.

At 7-foot-2, Maluach has the size and length to challenge almost anyone at the rim. His instinct was to meet Watson at the basket and use his wingspan to shut down the rim. Instead, Watson exploded through the play and finished with a highlight dunk.

Brooks could only laugh while also giving Maluach credit for not allowing the moment to change how physically he plays.

“But one thing about you, though, is that you don’t care about none of that shit. Because half the time, you’re gonna get those blocks. But that one was a pretty good highlight. I can’t even lie.”

That might be the most important part of Maluach’s story. Young defenders are inevitably going to get dunked on. The ones who become great defenders are usually the ones who keep challenging anyway.

Maluach appears to already understand that.

His rookie season was largely underwhelming. Maluach averaged 3.2 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 0.7 blocks in 46 appearances while playing just 8.8 minutes per game.

But there were flashes of what the Phoenix Suns believe he can eventually become. In his first career start against the Dallas Mavericks, Maluach finished with 14 rebounds and three blocks, showing exactly why the Suns are intrigued by his defensive upside.

His growth became even more obvious in the 2026 Summer League, where he averaged 19.5 points and 12.8 rebounds per game and earned All-Summer League Second Team honors.

Now entering his second season, Maluach has the chance to turn those flashes into consistent production.

Watson’s dunk will probably stay attached to his rookie memories forever, but Maluach does not sound embarrassed by it. If anything, he seems to appreciate the lesson.

The NBA is filled with elite athletes capable of putting even the best-intentioned defenders on highlight reels. Maluach learned that immediately against Watson, but Brooks’ response says plenty about the young center.

He got put on a poster, but he is still going to jump the next time.

The post-whistle chaos that marred the end of Argentina’s World Cup Final loss to Spain this summer will have big implications for both sides, specifically the runners-up.

Argentine players Leandro Paredes, Nahuel Molina, and Thiago Almada plus team official Roberto Ayala have been suspended and fined, while Spain's Gavi also has been punished by FIFA.

The final whistle had just blown in New Jersey when Paredes grabbed Eric Garcia's throat and threw Gavi to the ground. FIFA charged Paredes with assault.

Paredes has been suspended 10 matches and fined $90,000, while Molina will miss seven games and faces the same fine.

Ayala is suspended three games, while Almada and Gavi will both miss a game. All three were fined $30,000.

FIFA have also punished Argentina's FA, putting their next two men's home games at a 50% attendance ban and fining the CONMEBOL member $321,000 for "breaches of articles 13 paragraph 2 c) (Using a sports event for demonstrations of a non-sporting nature), 14 paragraph 5 (Team misconduct), 15 (Discrimination and racist abuse) in light of discriminatory chants and gestures by its supporters, and 17 (Order and security at matches) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC)."

This week, the Pittsburgh Steelers made something of a surprising move when they gave backup defensive lineman Keeanu Benton a four-year, $72 million contract extension. Benton has moved to defensive end this offseason where he should see much more success with an eye on a starting spot in 2027.

This leaves the Steelers with just $1.129 million, according to Over The Cap. This sounds like a terrifyingly low number given the Steelers still haven't worked out a contract extension for cornerback Joey Porter Jr.

But as we all know, the salary cap is mostly smoke and mirrors and a talented general manager like Omar Khan can work magic to find money. This could take the form of a trade, a release or some contract restructures, should Pittsburgh need to find some salary cap space in a hurry.

In addition to Benton, the Steelers gave edge Nike Herbig and tight end Darnell Washington big extensions this offseason while Porter Jr. waits.

FC Barcelona have officially announced the transfer of Tommy Marques to SC Braga in the Portuguese league.

“FC Barcelona and SC Braga have reached an agreement for the transfer of player Tommy Marques. The Club reserves a buy-back option and a percentage of a future sale of the player,” the club statement read.

“FC Barcelona wishes Tommy Marques the best of luck in this new stage and thanks him for his dedication throughout all these years at the Club.”

The19-year-old Barça academy graduate will leave the club and provide a significant financial return.

The Portuguese side made the strongest push for the young midfielder, although Ajax had also shown interest. Ultimately, Marques has now signed for SC Braga.

€11 million deal

The deal was completed for a fixed fee of €11 million for 100% of the player’s rights.

It is an excellent financial operation for Barça, who will also retain a buy-back option on the Catalan midfielder, as well as a percentage of any future sale.

Marques joined La Masia at nine years old, arriving a decade ago. The Barcelona midfielder trained with the first team for much of the last campaign, although he retained a reserve-team registration and played for Barça Atletic in Segunda RFEF.

During the final part of the season, however, he became a regular in virtually all of Hansi Flick’s squads and even earned his first-team debut in a 3-0 victory over RCD Mallorca at Spotify Camp Nou.

He later made another appearance, playing a few minutes in an inconsequential defeat away to Alaves after Barça had already secured the league title.

With his sale, Barcelona continue to move forward with their outgoing-transfer operation.

The next players expected to leave include Marc Casado, Hector Fort, Guille, and Toni Fernandez.

Head coach Reigna Bloxham talks to Dragons playersLexisNexis Dragons' Reinga Bloxham was named 2026 NSL coach of the season [Getty Images]

LexisNexis Dragons have changed almost a third of their squad as they bid to improve on fifth place in Netball Super League (NSL).

Head coach Reigna Bloxham has signed New Zealanders Saviour Tui (goal shooter), Holly Mather (centre, wing defence), along with former England Under-21 captain Phoebe Maslen (centre, wing defence).

They replace Wales international Phillipa Yarranton who is retiring, South African mid-courter Khanyisa Chawane who has departed after three seasons, and Ellen Withington who was signed as a permanent replacement player during 2026.

Having finished bottom of NSL in 2025, Dragons fell only three points short of making the end of season play-offs in this year's campaign.

Fifth in the eight-team league represented the Welsh franchise's best finish since 2014.

"I am really looking forward to what this 2027 squad can do this season," said Bloxham.

"We have been building our performance culture the past two seasons so I am pleased with the foundation we have to launch ourselves into the season.

"Being able to secure the core of the team has allowed us to just add a few extra players who will add to our talent pool. They will bring a new energy, style and flare to our game."

Saviour Tui has signed from ANZ Premiership side Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic. The 24-year-old Wellington-born goal shooter or goal attack has represented both New Zealand and Samoa on the international stage, and also spent several seasons under Bloxham at Southern Steel.

"Everything I have heard about this club [Dragons] and this environment made it an easy decision. I am here to compete, to contribute and to help take this team as far as it can go," Tui said.

Holly Mather joined Mainland Tactix in 2025, winning the ANZ Premiership in her debut season, before helping them reach the Elimination Final this year.

The 25-year-old mid-courter said: "They [Dragons] embrace the same passion for netball as me. I can't wait to work hard, play hard with this squad."

Phoebe Maslen joins from NIC Leeds Rhinos having previously played in the NSL for Birmingham Panthers and Team Bath.

"I am so excited to be a Dragon for the 2027 season. I can't wait to get started and see what we can achieve together. This is a really exciting squad and I'm looking forward to the challenge," Maslen said.

Seven players remain from the Dragons encouraging 2026 campaign which saw them win six of their 14 games, with three defeats by just one goal.

They will be led once again by Welsh Feathers captain Bethan Dyke (wing attack, centre) who returns for a third season with Dragons.

She is joined by four more Wales internationals in Leah Middleton (goalkeeper, goal defence), Alex Johnson (goal defence), Victoria Booth (wing defence) and goal shooter Georgia Rowe who was Dragons' top goalscorer in the 2026 season.

Rowe is joined in the attacking circle by Scotland international Niamh McCall, who was third in NSL over the past season for two-goal Super Shots.

The 10-player squad is completed by Jacqui Newton returning for a fourth year.

The 29-year-old Australian goal defence was named in the NSL All-Star 7 for the 2026 season.

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has announced he is pulling out of the upcoming U.S. Open due to a knee injury.

Sinner, last year’s U.S. Open runner-up and 2024 champion, said in a social media post that over the past few days he’s been doing on-court work, but that he needs more recovery time.

“Even though I have been working hard with my team and my medical staff, we have now had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete at the US Open this year. We have been back on court in Monte Carlo over the last couple of days and have realized that I still need more time to recover from my right knee issue.

“I’m obviously very sad and disappointed, as New York has a special place in my heart. I was very much looking forward to coming back and playing in the electric atmosphere in front of the great fans there.”

The 25-year-old Sinner, who has not missed a Grand Slam tournament since making his professional debut at the 2019 U.S. Open, has been out of action since winning Wimbledon last month.

Sinner's second-straight win at the All-England Club in July was his fifth major title and first tournament win of this season.

The decision to withdraw by Sinner comes one day after Carlos Alcaraz, who beat the Italian in last year’s U.S. Open final, announced he was returning following a four-month absence due to a wrist injury.

According to Sinner’s camp, he will remain in Europe to recovery and is hoping to return when the ATP Tour heads to Asia in September.
