The Baltimore Ravens walked out of a pair of joint practices with the Minnesota Vikings with plenty of reasons to feel encouraged. There's much to be proud of. One doesn't have to dig deep to uncover specific examples. The defense competed at a high level. They challenged one of the NFL's better offenses. They generated praise from coaches and players alike. For some teams, performances like that can become a source of momentum as the regular season approaches. Roquan Smith doesn't seem interested in viewing things that way.
Following Baltimore's second joint practice with the Vikings, he was one of the players who spoke with media members. The Ravens' defensive captain was asked whether the strong showing could help build confidence for the defense heading into the season. His response revealed a mindset rooted less in recent results and more in something far more important.
"Maybe for some, but at the end of the day, we know who we are inside and out, because if you don't know who you are, the moment something tough happens, you'll crack. I don't think that's any of us at all. It's about staying true to who we are throughout the process and just knowing that this is a step throughout the process and we're on our way to where we want to go, but it's just one step at a time and you have to be respectful of it."
Smith's answer stood apart because he never really discussed momentum. Instead, he talked about identity. Joint practices can create narratives. A team performs well against an unfamiliar opponent, confidence grows, and outside observers begin projecting what it might mean for the season ahead. Smith's comments suggested that's not how Baltimore views the process.
Roquan Smith believes identity must matter more than momentumAny time Smith talks, it's wise to listen. Ahead of the second preseason game, he acknowledged the value of the work against Minnesota. Earlier in the session, he praised the defense's overall performance and noted that both teams benefited from the experience.
Still, he made it clear that two productive days in August should not determine how a team views itself. That's because confidence built solely on results can be fragile. When adversity arrives, and every NFL team faces adversity eventually, those relying on recent success often find themselves searching for answers. Smith believes the Ravens have something sturdier to lean on.
His confidence comes from knowing who Baltimore is, what standards the team has established, and how players respond when challenges arise. The Ravens didn't travel to Minnesota looking for validation. They traveled there looking for growth.
Based on Smith's comments, the most important takeaway wasn't proving anything to outsiders. It was continuing the process of becoming the team they believe they can be, and if he is right, the true test of that identity won't come during a successful August practice. It will come later, when something goes wrong, and the Ravens are forced to show exactly who they are.

This 'bigger' Jalen Brunson claim bluntly puts Kevin Durant, Nikola Jokic in his shadow originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Max Kellerman just put Jalen Brunson ahead of two of the league's biggest names, which could cause a stir in the NBA community.
After winning the NBA Championship with the New York Knicks, Brunson enters the conversation off a historic run as they broke a 53-year championship drought this past season. Along the way, he took home the NBA Cup MVP, Eastern Conference Finals MVP, and Finals MVP awards.
In the regular season, he made the All-NBA Second Team and averaged 26.0 points over 74 games. But his performance in the playoffs was something special. He averaged 28.4 points, 6.1 assists, and 3.2 rebounds across 19 playoff games.
In the five-game Finals series, that average rose to 32.6 points, 4.6 assists, and 4.2 rebounds as New York marched to a 16-3 postseason record.
On top of that, Game 5 of the Finals brought in 24.5 million viewers and peaked at 33 million. The whole series averaged 20.6 million. Plus, the Knicks are locked in for 34 national TV games next season, which ties them for the most in the league.
That’s why Kellerman made his case on the "Game Over" podcast with Rich Paul, saying, "Jalen Brunson is a bigger star than Shai – not close. Bigger star than Jokic – not close. None of those. The only guys who are on his level- he's a bigger star than KD. He's a bigger draw than KD right now."
LeBron chasing what Brunson already has? 👀
There’s a real belief he’ll grab that 5th ring this season… and that’s exactly why the 76ers got paired with the Knicks for the season opener.

When Paul asked him to clarify, Kellerman said he is talking about the league today, not career résumés [yahoo.com]. He used the TV schedule to prove his point. The Knicks are tied with the Lakers, 76ers, and Spurs at 34 national games. Meanwhile, the Oklahoma City Thunder only have 30 and the Denver Nuggets have 28, even though Shai Gilgeous-Alexander won MVP.
Brunson ranks third in the league in jersey sales. It is another sign of how fast his popularity grew after the championship parade down the Canyon of Heroes.
More NBA news:Philadelphia loves to buy into the notion of having a 'quarterback factory,' and that's the biggest reason why the Eagles should give Cole Payton more preseason work, even while Andy Dalton and Tanner McKee continue competing for the backup quarterback job.
That does not mean Philadelphia should interrupt the QB2 evaluation. Dalton and McKee still need meaningful snaps against New England. The Eagles, however, already know more about both veterans than they know about Payton. Payton has more roster security than a typical bubble player because Philadelphia selected him in the fifth round of the 2026 NFL draft. Jalen Hurts is the unquestioned starter. The Eagles acquired Dalton in a trade with Carolina, while McKee returns after serving as Hurts’ primary backup last season.
Payton provided Philadelphia’s only spark in its 24-7 preseason loss to Baltimore. The fifth-round pick completed 4 of 9 passes for 37 yards and a touchdown while adding 45 rushing yards. His 17-yard scramble extended the Eagles’ lone scoring drive. Payton’s athletic ability offers something different from Dalton and McKee, but evaluating him exclusively against players near the bottom of opposing depth charts provides limited information. Philadelphia should give him one series earlier in the first half with a stronger supporting cast, and then allow him to drive the car the entire second half.
Howie Roseman has acknowledged the possibility of carrying four quarterbacks on the initial 53-man roster. That would be unusual, but Payton’s four-year rookie contract and developmental upside give the Eagles reasons to consider it. McKee is entering the final season of his contract, while Dalton represents a short-term veteran option. Payton could become Philadelphia’s primary backup candidate in 2027.
The Eagles must determine whether Dalton or McKee is QB2. They also need enough evidence to decide whether Payton can eventually replace both. More preseason snaps would help answer that question.

Kit leaks are nothing new, of course, but seem to come earlier and earlier every season.
X account memorabilia1899, which has a good track record when it comes to Barcelona kit leaks, has posted the following image and claims it’s around “80 percent” accurate.

There’s already been plenty of speculation about next season’s home kit flying about and talk that Barcelona are working on a design that could incorporate the original club crest.
It’s not clear if that will actually happen but it certainly seems as if next year’s design will feature thin vertical stripes and some deeper Barcelona colors.

LEEDS, England (AP) — England's all-seam attack has captain Joe Root stoked about what more they can achieve after swatting aside Pakistan in the first test at Headingley on Friday.
England won by an innings and 103 runs inside three days. Pakistan was bowled out for 171 and 135 against England's 409.
Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue took eight wickets each, Jofra Archer grabbed three on Friday, and Gus Atkinson one. Batting allrounder Dan Lawrence bowled one over of off-spin, a maiden, to break up the barrage of seam on a fair pitch.
Robinson, in his first test since June, and Archer played together in a test for the first time. They handled the new ball.
Tongue and Atkinson won the Hundred for Manchester Super Giants in the final last Sunday and had only one day of training for the test.
The in-and-out Robinson has played the most tests, 22, and Atkinson the least, 13. If they can all stay fit — always a big if — the home Ashes series against Australia is less than a year away.
“It's very exciting because I still think they don't know how good they are yet and what they're capable of, and I think that's a great place to be when you can put in performances like that,” Root said.
“An attack with that kind of variety, different things to call upon at different times in the game ... and as well the fact they bowled well in partnerships.”
Root was no less happy with the batting in the bowler-friendly conditions. Jordan Cox replaced the injured Jacob Bethell at first drop and Lawrence was recalled for the first time in two years to try and fill the allrounder spot vacated by the retired Ben Stokes.
Both contributed half-centuries: Cox (73) and Lawrence (51) beside Root (66) and Harry Brook (91).
“We found a really good tempo, managing the phases,” Root said.
"Jordan Cox coming in at three and playing with such control, such a calm nature.
"Dan coming in at six and getting a score like he did, Brooky showing why he's the best player in the world. Lots of good stuff to take into Lord's (second test) and start the series.”
Root's decisions as captain were also on song, right from winning the toss and choosing to bowl. Root said before the match he didn't want to try to captain like Stokes. It would be too hard to try, anyway, he added.
Stokes imploded and quit while losing the home series to New Zealand 2-1 in June, and Root was given the armband because of his sensibility. He welcomed the chance to improve on his first stint as permanent captain from 2017-22, the burden of which during the COVID-19 pandemic dragged him down.
Typically, Root turned the focus on teammates rather than himself.
“You can set whatever fields you want, the bowlers have still got to deliver,” he told the BBC. "Sometimes you've set fields for different reasons, sometimes it works out exactly how you see it.
"You're always trying to make plays and find wickets. The guys executed brilliantly, we caught beautifully as well which is important.
“I thought we showed maturity actually in how to manage the conditions and it's a big reason we’re here now.”

NFL Analyst Reveals Potential Problem With Aaron Rodgers-Mike McCarthy Reunion in PittsburghAgainst all odds, the Pittsburgh Steelers, with Aaron Rodgers as their quarterback, made it to the playoffs last season. Injuries to Joe Burrow and Lamar Jackson certainly played a part in it, which became wildly apparent during their postseason game against the Houston Texans.
A blowout loss ended their year and triggered a coaching change that reunited the four-time MVP with Mike McCarthy as his head coach once again. However, for one analyst, that pairing comes with a huge question mark.
Aaron Rodgers Might Not Be the Quarterback for Mike McCarthy AnymoreAfter a disastrous run with the New York Jets, Rodgers came to the Steelers amid a lot of fanfare. Unsurprisingly, though, the partnership wasn’t revolutionary even as they won the AFC North.
Over the course of the year, the former Super Bowl champion threw for 3,322 passing yards and 24 touchdowns against 7 interceptions. A passer rating of 94.8 was among the lowest of his entire career, and he finished at number 29 on PFN’s QB Impact Metric with an impact score of 71.9.

The offense as a whole was far from revolutionary, ranking at number 16 on PFN’s Offense Impact Metric. But even as they substitute an offense run by Arthur Smith for one Rodgers is familiar with, the switch might not be seamless.

NFL analyst Jon Ledyard made an appearance on “The Mina Kimes Show”, where he questioned how effective a 42-year-old Rodgers would be in the system. Explaining the problem, he went into detail about the playstyle differences that now exist between them.
“I think the big question in this offense is the funniest one to ask: Is Aaron Rodgers a good fit for it? Which seems crazy considering it’s Mike McCarthy and considering the history the two of them have together,” Ledyard said. “But Aaron Rodgers hasn’t wanted to be a quarterback who’s dropped back with true pass sets and thrown the ball down the field and ripped it in the middle of the field.”
Instead, he believed that a lot of the issues from the offense last season stemmed directly from the Green Bay Packers legend. Rather than utilizing his arm strength and spending considerable time in the pocket, Ledyard believed that Rodgers had completely revamped his playstyle.

“He really wanted to be a guy that, as much as we make fun of last year’s offense, and Arthur Smith certainly has his limitations as an offensive coordinator that were shown last year, too, Rogers wanted to play that way. He wanted to get the ball out quickly,” Ledyard added.
Rather than slinging it around the field, Ledyard argued, “He wanted to throw to backs a bunch. He didn’t want to get hit. He has not shown a great desire to drop back and rip the thing around the yard the way that McCarthy was.”
Ultimately, the regular season will provide many of these answers for fans in Pittsburgh. But the warning signs for a partnership between McCarthy and Rodgers in 2026 are impossible to ignore.
However, after the first game of the preseason, in which he threw for 153 yards and 2 touchdowns on 13 passing attempts, while adding another score on the ground, Drew Allar might be a name that the franchise can turn to if things don’t pan out with Rodgers.

Adam Murphy made five appearance for Swindon Town last season before an ankle injury cut his loan spell short [Shutterstock]Fleetwood Town have signed Bristol City midfielder Adam Murphy on a six-month loan deal.
Murphy, 21, made five appearances during a loan spell with Swindon Town last season.
The Republic of Ireland Under-21 international could make his Cod Army debut against Gillingham on Saturday.
"Once I spoke to the gaffer and he outlined what he wanted me to do and how he wants us to play, I felt it aligned with the strengths I can bring," he told the club website.

Mark Mitchell has officially entered the NCAA transfer portal, On3’s Pete Nakos has learned. He goes in with a ‘Do Not Contact’ tag attached. Mitchell spent the last two years playing at Missouri under head coach Dennis Gates.
Four years of college basketball have already been played by Mitchell. However, a judge’s order in Kentucky provided him another season of eligibility. Mitchell obtained a temporary restraining order, becoming one of the many athletes to get back on the court through the courts.
Now, Mitchell could turn into one of the more prized players on the open market. Late August usually means coaches have full rosters and are not able to add players. However, times have changed in the landscape. Five-for-five opened the door for members of the 2022 recruiting class.
You have to imagine multiple high-level programs are interested in Mitchell. Having the ‘Do Not Contact’ while entering the portal usually serves as a sign as well. An interesting and potentially season-changing recruitment is on the horizon for a few head coaches.
More on Mark Mitchell and his college careerMitchell spent the last two seasons at Missouri after playing for the Duke Blue Devils from 2022-2024. This past season, the Kansas City, KS native was selected to the All-SEC Second Team after posting 18.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game.
Before the NBA Draft, Gates described what makes Mitchell a great player. Mitchell played such a big role for Mizzou during the 2026-26 season that Gates thought there would be a role for him to find at the NBA level.
“The team is getting one of the most versatile players in the country,” Gates said via ABC 17. “Great size, great strength, great ability, one of the top guys in the country at drawing fouls, but also a guy that can facilitate. We were able to put him in a natural position, ultimately a position where he facilitated, a little bit of everything, brought the ball up the court. There’s not a position he didn’t play. He played the one through the five, and I’m just thankful we had the right players around him and also his accolades and those things that he was able to do.”
Mitchell played high school football at Mission (KS) Sunrise Christian Academy, where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 23 overall recruit in the 2022 cycle, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all three major recruiting media companies.
